In this modern age, the ability to view satellite photos of earth has become a hobby of mine.
Sites like google Earth, which lets you fly anywhere on the planet and google maps, with that sweet, street-view function, have changed the way I look at the world and look for directions.
The earliest concept of a satellite first began in 1869, in a book written by Edward Everett Hale, called 'The Brick Moon'.
The first artificial satellite was the 'Sputnik'. It was launched by the Soviet Union in October of 1957, which triggered the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union.
There are many different types of satellites:
Weather Satellites
Tether Satellites
Space Stations
Earth Observation Satellites
Anti-Satellite Satellites
Astronomical Satellites
Biosatellites
Communication Satellites
Miniaturized Satellites
Navigational Satellites
Reconnaissance Satellites

There have been many advances in the technology of satellites. Teledesic is a new corporation that plans to bring the internet to satellites.
Not only are satellites advancing the consumer market, but also scientific research. ERTS or Earth Resources Technology Satellite provides additional means of gathering information in areas such as agriculture, physical and cultural geography, geological and mineral resources, cartography, hydrology, and oceanography.
The future contains a powerful presence of satellites in the consumer and scientific areas and is sure to bring wonders we never thought possible.
